Guide for Covenant Discipleship Groups
Published in Paperback by Discipleship Resources (May, 2003)
Author: Gayle Turner Watson
Average review score:

An Excellent Help For Small Group Minsitry
Guide for Covenant Discipleship Groups by Gayle Turner Watson is the latest of the new generation of Accountable Discipleship books to be published by Discipleship Resources. This book is the new basic resource that every pastor and all members of covenant discipleship groups needs to read. It is well written, clearly organized, concise, and user-friendly. Gayle Watson has given a valuable gift to the church in this book.

Guide for Covenant Discipleship Groups is organized in four parts. Part One answers the question: "Why Covenant Discipleship Groups?" Here Watson provides an excellent account of the Wesleyan heritage that is the foundation of Covenant Discipleship groups. She helps the reader understand that discipleship in the Wesleyan tradition is a "matter of heart and life." What we believe guides the way we live our life in the world. Watson also provides a very good and concise interpretation of the General Rule of Discipleship as a guide for living a balanced and varied discipleship. Part One provides an excellent foundation for understanding the "why" of covenant discipleship groups.

Part Two answers the question, "What are Covenant Discipleship Groups?" Watson clearly explains the nature, purpose, and goal of the groups. She also is very clear about what Covenant Discipleship groups are not. This helps to allay any confusion the reader may have about the character of the groups. Watson does not stop with answering the question posed in the section title. She goes on to answer several commonly asked questions: "Why am I joining a Covenant Discipleship group?" "Does this mean that my discipleship has been inadequate?" "Why do I need to join a Covenant Discipleship group?" "How will joining a Covenant Discipleship group affect my Christian friends and family who do not wish to join?" "What will happen to me in a Covenant Discipleship group?" These are important questions that Watson addresses in an honest and winsome fashion.

Part Three provides the "nuts and bolts" or the "how to do it" section of the book. Watson gives step-by-step processes for writing a covenant, leading the weekly meeting, and how to introduce and sustain Covenant Discipleship groups in your congregation. She asks and answers some of the common questions around the need for a written covenant and the covenant's role in the life of the group. As in Part Two, Watson's way of dealing with these questions is reason alone for reading the book. She has a way of clearing up common confusions and misconceptions that will bring down barriers and resistance to participation in and support for Covenant Discipleship groups.

In Part 4 Watson provides many useful helps for covenant writing and interpreting the groups for the congregation. There are sample covenant preambles, clauses, and conclusions. There is a sample covenant and a covenant worksheet. All of which are on reproducible pages. She also provides an excellent bibliography of other resources that will support group members in their journey of discipleship.

Guide for Covenant Discipleship Groups is the new, essential resource for pastors, lay leaders, and covenant discipleship group members who need to learn about and interpret covenant discipleship for the local church. Gayle Watson has given the church a valuable tool that will help the local church form faithful and dependable disciples who will witness to Jesus Christ in the world and follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion under

The Healthy Boomer: A No-Nonsense Midlife Health Guide for Women and Men
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (March, 2000)
Authors: Peggy Edwards, Miroslava Lhotsky, and Judy Turner

Bedside Book for Boomers....
If you, or a friend, are turning 40 - or 50 - this is the book to get for yourself, and/or to give as a gift. Along with the black crepe, the Over the Hill balloons and cards, this book is a baby boomer must have.

Most of the books I review are open for lending to family or friends - this book is an exception. It sits on my bedside table when it isn't accompanying me on trips that allow me to do a lot of reading. This chunky book offers me comfort and information as I move along in life.

In a Chapter called, "Making Changes That Last!" you'll find these words from the authors:

"One of the downers in midlife is recognizing that we are no longer protected by the invincibility of youth. One of its joys is recognizing that we now have the wisdom and experience we need to take control of our health and make choices that matter.

"The chapters that follow are filled with lots of sensible and practical suggestions based on the latest research. We would like to tell you that there is a new miracle drug to prevent cancer or reverse aging. That just isn't the case...Alas the road to good health in midlife remains largely dependent on three key ideas: a positive approach, moderation, and consistency."

You can pick this book up, choose any any chapter and find information, short stories of other Baby Boomers' experiences, short charts, and explanations. It begins with a small chapter on the Midlife Journey, and closes with a short chapter called Body, Mind and Soul.

In between, there are separate chapters on specific female and male issues (prostate cancer; male menopause; female menopause; breast cancer), as well as shared concerns. Memory loss, heart care, intimate relationships, the search for the Fountain of Youth, Healthy Eating, Exercise and much more are covered.

Best of all, at the end of every chapter is a reference list with more books to read, organizations, websites to visit and a cross-reference to other chapters in this book.

The thick paperback edition has an attractive cover, quite suitable as a gift. And if someone doesn't give it to you as a gift, do yourself a favor-- get yourself a copy!

The Heart of the Sky: Travels Amoung the Maya (Kodansha Globe)
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (June, 1994)
Authors: Peter Canby and Philip Turner
Average review score:

A fascinating introduction to the Maya world
What a great introduction to a vigorous culture that many of us had erroneously assumed no longer existed! I feel that a whole new part of the world has opened up before me, thanks to Peter Canby's excellent research and intrepid reporting. Mr. Canby includes information that he gathered from anthropologists, epigraphers, naturalists, textile experts and other people who have lived their lives immersed in one aspect or another of the Maya world. He also obviously did a lot of background reading which adds further depth to the portrait his book presents of the past and present Maya phenomenon. In addition, the author reports on his own travels in the region, from the Yucatan to Chiapas to Guatemala. His firsthand experiences bring vividly to light the Maya world as it is today. I found it very enriching to learn from this highly readable book about the ancient, yet evolving universe of the Maya.

Hidden Allusions in Shakespeare's Plays: A Study of the Early Court Revels and Personalities of the Times
Published in Hardcover by Associated Faculty Pr Inc (November, 1976)
Author: Eva Lee Turner Clark

Masterpiece
Ever read something in Shakespeare and think, "Now what does THAT mean?" She's got the answer. Those little in-jokes are finally explained. "You are a fishmonger." If you think the glover's son from the boondocks wrote the Plays, you'd be in the dark forever as to what Hamlet meant. If you think that the Plays were written by the Earl of Oxford, the answer is plain as day. And so on. A play-by-play exegesis of unexplainable passages; it's as if the Earl himself is explaining "what he meant."

I bought this book from the publisher, via the Shakespeare-Oxford Society. I don't think I paid as much; seek them out.

This book should be in every library in creation. And your personal one.

A different version of the Night Before Christmas.
What would a night before christmas be if their were no reindeer, only bears? And Santa Claus's name wasn't Santa, but Sainty? If it took place in a cabin? It would be a Hillbilly Night before christmas!! A great book!

History and Science of Knots (Series on Knots and Everything , Vol 11)
Published in Hardcover by World Scientific Pub Co (June, 1996)
Authors: J. C. Turner, P. Van De Griend, and P. Van De Griend
Average review score:

KNOTTY KNOWLEDGE
This is a beautiful book, physically & intellectually. The book covers a variety of aspects of "knot", from the mathematical to the practical, including decorative knotting. It is not a guide to knot tying, nor a treatise on topology/knot theory. Rather, here is a collection of articles that shed light on "knot", from authors many of whom belong to the International Guild of Knot Tyers [sic] sharing their love of aspects of "knot".

Admittedly, this is a book for those who love knots, rather than for those who only care to learn a few things about how to tie a few knots; similarly, those who are interested in topology will perhaps not see the couple of related chapters/articles sufficient to justify the cost--they're of an overview nature.
